Of Angels and Demons

I have just seen Angels and Demons in the theater. It is the movie adaptation of Dan Brown’s bestselling Angels and Demons, the prequel to another hit, The Da Vinci Code. I have also read the book and have reread it to check the adaptation’s accuracy. There are numerous changes, some small details but the others are quite big. I stopped counting when I reached 20.

1. How Robert Langdon got involved in the case.

2. Vittoria Vetra’s relationship with victim, fellow scientist

3. Good exposition on the realtionship of the Church and Science

4. “do you believe in god? “- should've been said by vittoria

5. arab background ng assassin

6. Langdon was denied access to the Vatican Archives for 3 years only, not 10.

7. Vatican archives scene, Vittoria and Robert are alone.

8. The girl who screamed in a public execution was feeding pigeons

9. Vittoria was kidnapped by the assassin

10. The 4th cardinal wasn’t saved, he died, and was naked

11. The sixth brand is not the “papal seal”

12. The assassin died in Robert and Vittoria’s hands

13. No hospitalization for camerlegno when he was branded

14. Confrontation scene ni Kohler and camerlegno

15. Antimatter, when discovered was immediately taken by the camerlegno

16. Missing “revelation of God” to Camerlegno

17. Robert in helicopter with camerlegno

18. Death of camerlegno

19. Acclamation by adoration, pointed out by a scholar not the cardinals

20. The Elected Pope is the Great Elector.

Of course this is just a movie adaptation, some details in the book cannot and will not be included to keep the movie tight and concise. However there are changes which I think did not really help.

The movie decided to focus on the Church, whereas in the book, the focus is the seemingly irreconcilable differences between religion and science. Hence the title itself, Angels and Demons. That, I think was one of the biggest mistakes in the movie adaptation. In the book, Dan Brown took pains to expound on the advances of science, particularly the anti-matter and its various implications, in science as well as in religion. Brown also touched a very sensitive topic that is still a raging debate, evolutionism vs creationism. In the movie, these aren’t so clear.

One character I was curious about is the camerlegno. I found his character in the book very disturbed, an overzealous man of god, but you won’t see it coming. Dan Brown did a great job building up his character. But in the movie, he was just bland. The religious ecstasy he felt when “God talked to him” was absent. The moment when he “realized” where the anti-matter was placed, gone, edited out.

Another character who underwent a drastic change is the assassin. In the book, he was portrayed as Middle Eastern and very sensual, finding arousal in killing people. Why did they change it? Because of political correctness? Dan Brown has a reason why he made him an Arab. In the assassin’s character, he was also tracing the etymology of a feared word, assassin, and exploring history. By the way, he died falling out of a tower, not being blown to bits by a car bomb.

Vittoria also suffered from this censorship. She wasn’t the shorts-wearing tanned tourist in Vatican City. Vittoria appeared sedate and not sensual at all.

The ultimate twist was also missing, the one that would explain why the pope suddenly died and what his relationship is with science. This was the moment that everything fell to its place, and it was discarded in the movie. Why?

The movie is no doubt better that The Da Vinci Code. Angels and Demons had more action and brisker pace. But I wouldn’t trade the book for its movie. The books, both The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, gained world-reknown because of controversial issues regarding the church and Brown’s well-reasearched trivia. The movie The Da Vinci Code flopped because it was boring, the book itself, save for its controversial thesis, lacked the oomph for an adaptation. Now, the sequel-prequel Angels and Demons, made up for the boring part. But in the process, changed so much of the book’s details and is almost a separate entity.

F(r)ee Education: a reaction

We are almost in the last week of May and most are busy preparing for June's school opening. Parents are once again faced with the perennial problem of tuition fees for their schoolchildren.

I read in the Philippine Daily Inquirer that a parent wrote in and complained about fees being collected and the withholding of cards of these fees are not settled.

I would like to say something about the position Jerry Esplanada took when he wrote Assignment: DepEd Free means "no fee". He laid down the problem parents encounter every schoolyear very well. He even manage to get some DepEd insiders to recognize fee collection as an "open secret." He also quoted Antonio Tinio, from ACT, that the main problem lies in the budget allocation and educational policies of DepED.

However, Mr. Esplanada concluded that "there is nothing wrong" with fee collection as long as it is voluntary and without consequences if not paid for. this is a very passive stand regarding this issue. He should have pushed a line of reasoning along Mr. Tinio's explanation. When Mr. Esplanada wrote that violations of "no fee collection" is an open secret, there is already something deeply wrong about it. Public schools are compelled to find creative ways to augment their Maintenance, Operating ang Other Expenses (MOOE) Allocation because the buget allocated for them is hardly enough.

The budgetary allocations and educational policies of the government betray a low regard for quality education. Mr. Esplanada should have maintained that education is a right and should be adequately subsidized by the government.

KUME for short (komersyalisasyon)

This is one song I'll never forget. I learned this in college, during our campaign fro higher state subsidy. It was composed by a university group, Alay Sining. I dedicate this to all parents who strive to give their children quality education, to all those who want to but can't.

Sing-along with me!

14 kume.wma -

Pambayad utang muna raw at militarisasyon

* Hindi inilalako ang edukasyon

Kaya parang gulay inilalako itong edukasyon

Ulitin *

When Blood Isn't Thicker Than Water

Last Monday, 18 May, the rebel priest Conrado Balweg's alleged executioner was accosted, together with his wife in Baguio and taken to police custody. He is his own brother, Jovencio Balweg.

Ideological differences, more than personal, play the decisive role in this divergence of paths.

In 1999, Conrado Balweg was executed by his former comrades for alleged blood debt. He founded the Cordillera People's Liberation Army in 1986 and split from the New People's Army.

Balweg envisioned a Cordilleran Army that is purely for and by Cordillera people. Low-landers are discriminated against and told to go back to where they came from. When it became clear that a reconcilation is imposible because of vast differences expecially in the interpretation of the Cordilleras in the Maoist people's war, the Communist Party of the Philippines expelled Balweg and his cohorts.

A few years passed before the NPA and CPLA's first armed clash, with the CPLA staging an ambush against their former comrades and working with the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The NPA also held the CPLA accountable for numerous humans rights violations against non-supporters.

Jovencio Balweg, may or may not be his brother's actual executioner. I am more inclined to think that this is an angle probably spun by the AFP as it is the most colorful and emotional angle to a story of two brothers torn by ideological differences.

Blood they say is thicker than water. But not with Jovencio and Conrado who have opted to follow different paths not withstanding their fraternal ties.

Who is right? Who is wrong?

Let God's people decide.

"When the Night Comes Falling From the sky"

I saw thousands who could have overcome the darkness,
For the love of a lousy buck, I've watched them die.
Bob Dylan
"When the Night Comes Falling From the sky

This is a song I dedicate to our Congressmen who have taken the liberty of alleviating their own financial woes. Filing Joint Resolution 36, Congress seeks to adjust the government employees salary. All's well for underpaid government employees if this resolution didn't come with a bad taste in the mouth. Of course this salary adjustment also covers them. And working on the principle to equal pay for work of equal value, their salaries will be atleast double what they are receiving now. The President's salary, from P60,000 will be P120,000; the lawmakers' will jump up to P90,000. Undersecretaries, assistant secretaries and such will also enjoy a hefty increase.

This on top of an already ballooning budget deficit of P270B this year.

This resolution is on top of the order of the day, meaning, urgent, for approval as soon as possible.

However, workers' clamor for a mere P125 increase in minimum wage has always been relegated to the back burner. It cannot be done in one click, at the most, but has to be given in installments covering how many years. The P125 wage increase, considering how long it has been being campaigned for. And considering how many times inflation rate has gone up, P125 increase is not even enough.

The same fate has befallen the P3000 across the board campaign for government employees. It has been an almost futile cause if not for the lawmakers' greed themselves to benefit from a salary increase.

"We are united that workers should be given their due share in the creation of wealth and economic production. Labor should be compensated, at the very least, by the assurance that the worker has the capacity to provide for more than the basic necessities of his family. The Philippine Constitution mandates, and a just society necessitates, the state to ensure decent living and economic stability for all.

We are dismayed that wages have long been frozen at levels far from the cost of living. From 2001-06, wages increased only by 18.6\%, while cost of basic goods rised by 38\%. The present national average of the minimum wage is just a meager 34\% of the P871 average living wage."

-- Unity Statement for the P125 Legislated Wage Hike

The above-mentioned Joint Resolution 36, if it passes their scrutiny, will be effective starting July 1 of this year.

Of course delicadeza, and the law, dictates that any legislation they would pass in their term, they should not stand to benefit from. However, delicadeza seems to have been lost in their vocabulary.

The Amazing Race Presidential Edition

The Amazing Race Presidential Edition has just commenced!

Less than a year to go before the national elections, presidentibles have lined themselves up and declared, in words or in deeds, their intention of winning the highest electoral post.

Political analyst Tony Gaimaitan has counted 14 candidates for the presidency. That's easy you say, even a layman can surmise who's in the running and who wishes to be in the running. There have already been lots of talks, speculations if you will, as to who will team up with up, surveys of "winnable" candidates, a barage of tv ads (and radio blocktimers) that espouse so many pro-poor advocacies, and muscle-flexing of political machineries.

What are the perks of this job that people just can't resist signing up and pursuing this inspite of a meager salary?

One, winning this coveted price entitles you to your very own army. Nobody can just push you around (except those that you let) or say things that will be detrimental to you stature. Anyone who doesn't toe the official line gets booted out, for life sometimes, or just scared out their wits permanently by hooded motorcycle-riding gunmen in broad daylight.

Second, this entitles you and your family to countless government contracts that you can effect in office. Every government contract automatically allots a percentage of "goodwill money"
for you and the first family.

Thirdly, the winner of The Amazing Race Presidential Edition secures your place in a society
of bootleggers and speculators. You get to travel the world, all-expenses paid by the Filipino people's taxes, with the entourage of your choice. Experience hobnobbing with world figures and hope that their popularity rubs off on you.

And lastly, this ensures immunity for you and your family inspite of getting embroiled in the dirtiest of scams. As long as you hold the title to the crown, you can rule as long as you want, however you want to.

All you need is a well-oiled political machinery composed not neccessarily of the most intelligent and sincere public servants but those who are thick-faced and strong of stomach politicians who can devise the most devious legislations to make your crimes legitimate.

All aspirants must submit their entry forms on November 2009.

Heck, you can start campaigning now!

Stop the Violent Cycle

Tomorrow is Domestic Violence Awareness Day in Bloggers Unite. Domestic Violence, like rape, is a crime suffered by women in silence. Mainly because of the social stigma and condonation that comes with domestic violence, wives often choose to keep quiet and tolerate the beatings, slappings and who knows what else. Society plays a large role in molding this very passive way of thinking.

In a predominantly Catholic society, women are taught to be docile to their husbands and families. Women were raised to be subservient and be tolerant of sufferring, as "any man or woman joined in holy matrimony", man should not, cannot separate. Annulments, divorce and /or legal separations are frowned upon in Filipino society, with the woman bearing the brunt of the stigma.

Also, as women are discouraged from taking up work and relegate her life looking after her children, wives often times have a limited income and is financially dependent on ther husbands. With no income to support her of her children, women think twice, or thrice, before liberating themselves from the bonds of a violent, if not loveless, marriage.

Women have a choice to a better, more fulfilling life. Let us love ourselves, stop the vicious cycle and find redemption in liberation.

Defensor goes on the Defensive

I read somewhere that Mike Defensor recently became the laughing stock (again) of Philippine Politics because of the Jun Lozada fiasco. There has been talk that Defensor is once again playing the part of a pawn in the political game. Him pursuing the Jun Lozada perjury case has people wondering if he has learned his lesson at all. Remember the Hello Garci tape that he preemptorily said is fake, but was refuted by the same agency who he said found it fake? And now this.

Defensor has been down this road before, he has charged Lozada with perjury before, and the Judge threw it out. The brave one who risked his career for standing up to his beliefs is Judge Emmanuel Jorge Lorredo and this is his statement.

Judge Lorredo Order 4 May 09 Judge Lorredo Order 4 May 09 mlq3 Judge Emmanuel Jorge Lorredo refuses former cabinet man Michael Defensor's request to arraign Jun Lozada for perjury. Lloredo had originally thrown out the case entirely but was overruled by a superior court. This remarkable document is a rare example of a judge venting his spleen, and is perhaps an effort to get himself recused from the case.

Tag-ulan 2009

Napakalaking usapin nito noong 1997.

How do you Perpetuate Ignorance and Poverty

Customs Undersecretary Espele Sales seems to know the very answer to this question.

At it all started with Twilight.
I am sure almost everyone knows the story behind this. But I am going to tell anyway. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight attracted a lot of readers, so the book’s importer decided to order more books to meet the rising demand. However, Twilight’s success attracted a few personas of not really wholesome characters, namely the customs officials, especially Usec. Espele Sales. In a bid to squeeze (a lot of ) money out of this bestseller, “when an examiner named Rene Agulan opened a shipment of books, he demanded that duty be paid on it” which the Horrorable Usec did not find inconsistent at all with other previous (decades-ago) book importations.

This runs counter to the “Florence Agreement, a U.N. treaty that was signed by the Philippines in 1952, guaranteeing the free flow of ‘educational, scientific, and cultural materials’ between countries and declaring that imported books should be duty-free” as well as “Philippine law RA 8047, providing for ‘the tax and duty-free importation of books or raw materials to be used in book publishing.”

“Customs Undersecretary Espele Sales explained the government's position to a group of frustrated booksellers and importers in an Orwellian PowerPoint presentation, at which she reinterpreted the Florence Agreement as well as Philippine law RA 8047, providing for "the tax and duty-free importation of books or raw materials to be used in book publishing." For lack of a comma after the word "books," the undersecretary argued that only books "used in book publishing" (her underlining) were tax-exempt.

"What kind of book is that?" one publisher asked me afterward. "A book used in book publishing." And she laughed ruefully.”

Quoted from the text

Can you believe this *@#$%&? As the saying goes, the one-eyed man is king in the kingdom of the blind.

This is the stuff that horror books are made of. Undersecretary Sales and Examiner Agulan, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Good books are already very hard to procure in the Philippines, not so much with where they are sold, but their prices. Even locally published books are pricey. This alone already makes good books almost exclusively for the rich and the moneyed, discriminating against Filipinos who haven’t got a cent to spare. Filipinos who would like to enrich their lives and climb out of the hell-hole of poverty couldn’t do so because education, by conventional schooling or self-studying has become a privilege. And now, no thanks to the greedy customs officials who behave more like goons after the gold, they made learning even more obsolete.

Ginataang Santol Sarap!

Gata

Bagoong alamang, halagang P15

Sibuyas at bawang

Ikatlo, hayaang kumulo at maluto.

Presto! Malinamnam na ginataang santol.

Indestructible Pacquiao eyes to Pakyaw it all

Once again, Manny Pacquiao conquered the ring and sent his foe off to dreamland. In a very quick and lethal show of skill, Manny stopped Hatton in his tracks as early as the second round. Hatton's brawl style boxing, of which he is extremely proud of, proved no match to Pacquiao's nimble feet and lightning quick punches.

Yesterday, as in any day Pacquiao has a match, the streets were empty and everyone is glued to their tv sets. Even the Armed Forces of the Philippines announced an unofficial ceasefire to give way to the match. However, Pacquiao's victory claimed three other lives other than Hatton's career. Three elderly men were reported to have suffered from heart attack as the Pambansang Kamao wrapped up his fight and made the killer punch.

After Hatton, Philippine boxing analysts are claiming that Pacquiao is unstoppable. Manny, as he is fondly called, has brought Dela Hoya on his knees. And now, Hatton, the British
Boxing Star succumbed to his powerful Left straight. More ever, his next fight is highly anticipated, spurring on talks of who the next brave fighter will be. Will it be Mayweather Jr. or Marquez? The answer, neither.

Pacquiao's next most anticipated fight will not be in the MGM Grand canvas ring. It will happen in the political arena. The day prior to his fight, Pacquiao was interviewed on CNN's Talk Asia. There, on international television, he made known his intention of running "only for congress."

No one escaped his change of residence, especially his kababayans. From General Santos City, his hometown, he was introduced as coming from Saranggani Province. This, apparently, in preparation for his congressional ambition and to prevent a repeat of beating he suffered last 2004 from Rep. Darlene Custodio who won by a landslide.

Personally, I would prefer if Paquiao doesn't pursue his political ambitions. He said he wanted to "help especially his kababayans" and running for office, under the administration ticket, is one way to do so. Actually, if he really wants to, he can extend his help to his kababayans even if he's not their elected representative. Pacquiao, I'm afraid is the only a positive image booster of this administrataion. He has been used to decorate the halls of the powers that be and to refresh the foul image of the president, her family and her entire administration. Or has he not seen through its flimsy cover?

His desire to help his fellow Filipinos is admirable, but I'm afraid with Pacquiao's penchant for gambling and his expensive tastes, he would only be one more hand in the People's cookie jar.

Right of Reply Bill: Muzzle to Press Freedom

After the blatant extermination of hard-hitting journalists, now numbering to 61 (2008) journalists killed since GMA took office, the legislative branch of the Republic of the Philippines has decided to take it’s battle against “erroneous” reports and “irresponsible” journalism to a different arena. Over the next few days, we might not be able to read, see or hear news in newspapers, radio or televisions, instead, we’ll be seeing more of statements and rationalizations of politicians who become embroiled in news reports. On December 2007, the Lower House has filed the Right of Reply Bill or House Bill 3306.

The Right of Reply Bill is a bill that “seeks the granting to the right to reply to all persons accused directly or indirectly of having committed a crime” to “charges committed in all forms of mass media, websites or through any electronic device.”

This bill invokes justice and fairness in mass media coverage. Indeed, for one’s name to be dragged into exposés yet to be proven is not nice at all. It is also unfair for a politician, or any one for that matter to have their names plastered all over the news for crimes they claim they have not done. Therefore, this bill is heaven-sent to powerful people as the media who points an accussing finger to them will be compelled to run their answers in defense of their innocence.

However in reality, the Right of Reply Bill is nothing but a muzzle to silence journalists from exposing the irregularities in the government and keeping the people informed. For who else are almost always involved in multi-million scams? Who else are making the most noise when their rights are violated? Who have more than enough money to have those replies printed, aired and shown? They are not the small time drug addicts in the slums. Nor the feisty pick-up girl with blue hair. They are certainly not the sidewalk vendors always accused of defacing the metro landscape. Isn’t it an open secret that people who have the most to hide are precisely those in power who gain most from transactions that the masa should be benifitting from?

The Right of Reply Bill is a deceptive bill na seeks nothing but curtail what the people see and know. It is a legislated form of terrorism that will serve no one except those in power. It has already received a lot of flak from militant congressmen and people in the mass media. Let us make sure this bill remains shelved and never see the light of day at all.

This is the copy of the text, feel free to download and read through it.
